Vintage Hindu Apsara Khmer Sandstone Statue

One of the sculptural masterpieces created by the Champa people is the image of dancer Yang Naitri (Apsara) in reliefs and statues made of sandstone. Apsara dancers are present in most of Champa relics such as My Son, Dong Duong, Tra Kieu in Quang Nam province Vietnam

Apsara of the Champa people is shown on sandstone blocks with a full face, a head wearing a Kirata – Mukata style hat with many layers, two eyes wide, a high and wide nose bridge. To beautify and embellish the grace of the dancers, Champa artisans carved the earrings with delicate and harmonious tassels. In addition, the smiling thin lips made the dancer more lively.

Most Apsara statues are always in the nude position of the upper half of the body, revealing the chest full of vitality. Although the body is “semi-naked”, it is still a virginal appearance, surpassing the sense of mundane flesh. The slim waist along with the biceps, round thighs and the whole body rhythm like fluttering with each skillful dance movement showing off the graceful curves. The talented hand of the artist has portrayed beautiful and vivid Champa dancers.
